Has “You’re The Worst’ fizzled as it enters the second season? I don’t know how to describe it, but I was a little underwhelmed by the season premiere. In the second season opener, we see that Gretchen and Jimmy has started to live together, and they are very concerned that they are becoming boring (“Sweater People”) so they go out of their way to push the envelope – heavy drinking, cocaine, etc – just to compensate. The writers probably know we are asking the same question, so they are wise to address it themselves. However, I found it a little tiresome – their self-destructive streaks felt like more of the same old, and somehow it didn’t feel fresh or new. The show is still edgy and pushes boundaries, though – jokes you never thought would fly on television still abound – so I am thinking this may be a temporary pass. Plus, they have made the character of Lindsay (Kether Donohue) more interesting by having her un-partnered, and I could just imagine the shenanigans she could go into as she starts dating (Donahue runs away with every lien she speaks, even as she says ‘Ben Affleck and Jennifer Gardener’) Chris Geere and Aya Cash prove to be still just as appealing this time around – they exude danger and romance at the same time. Even as they try hard to portray despicable people, you can’t help but fall in love with them. They give more romance by being anti-romantic. I am curious as to how the scenarios will play out this time around as they settle into a kind of wedded bliss.
