Prince’s untimely passing made me sad. As an artist, I respect his music more than I like it. I may be in a minority int his, but I like it when his songs more when they are interpreted by other people. I like his collaborations with Sheena Easton (‘Sugar Walls’ and ‘101’ was my jam back in the day) and of course Vanity and Taja Sevelle. And of course, Sinead O Connor made a beautiful song like ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ into classic status.
His passing also made me pull out his scent, ‘3121,’ which was released in 2007. (7/7/07 to be exact – I guess Prince liked his numerology) As I look at the bottle now, and at the picture above, you can see that the bottle and packaging isn’t the prettiest, which may be the reason why Prince was sued and fined for failing to promote the fragrance. (Perhaps he hated it?) And I remember at the time that I thought that the scent would suggest a purple scent, but it didn’t. 3121 is a solid white floral – jasmine, gardenia, tuberose, ylang ylang. Somehow it doesn’t remind me of Prince nor his music, his aura, or persona. It screamed more Marc Jacobs. 3121 is not the worst thing in the world. It is a pretty decent and surprisingly strong white floral perfume. But it’s pretty generic and character less, which is a total 180 from everything Prince stood for.
