I didn’t know that VH1 was still doing ‘Divas Live’ concerts. I remember during the 90s I saw and looked forward to these concerts. Reportedly, VH1 is resurrecting the show after a four year hiatus. Titled ‘Unsilent Night,’ this edition boasts Mariah Carey, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, and Vanessa Williams as headliners. But wait – also starring are Teyana Taylor, Remy Ma, Serayah, Bebe Rexha, and Diana Gordon. Who? Wha? I guess I am so out of touch that I have never heard of those people and VH1 is deeming them big enough to get spotlights in thsi concert. I feel so old.
But Mariah opens the show only she can, and since it is a Christmas concert, The Queen of Christmas sings ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You.’ She sings it with gusto, and done Mariah Carey way, with emphasis on her pristine vocals (still impressive) while dancers do choreography around her. Who cares? She is still Mariah, and this is a real diva performance, Master class worthy for amateurs.
Patti La Belle does her thing, too, but confession time – I have never been a fan of hers, though of course I respect her, Just no connection there. I like Chaka Khan much better, but her voice is showing age here, and maybe it’s just my ears but I caught her falling short in the high notes.
I liked Vanessa Williams’ segment a lit more – as she sings ‘Save The Best For Last’ sequing into ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing.” She shows great star quality, and knows how to command the stage. Next to Carey’s her number impressed me the most.
As for the rest of the girls? I thought they were just….basic. I wish I could remember them with their voices, but they all sounded generic/good, hitting high notes as necessary with minimal lyric interpretation. If you asked me to pick any of them from a line up, I won;t be able to. But then again, maybe I am just old.
