‘It Had To Be You’ is one of my favorite songs so for a film to use it as a title (and as a title song) it better be good. Reviews I have read about this film have been mostly complementary, but I was really disgusted at the opening scene, where the main character Sonia (Christine Milioti) is on the toilet as she runs out of toilet paper. I mean, c’mon, isn’t this supposed to be a romantic comedy? Well, I guess it is one that starts with toilet humor. Thankfully, things get better for her in the toilet after that scene, as we see Sonia struggle with commitment anxieties. On one hand, it is good to see a role reversal here – it’s the woman who isn’t running to get married! – but must the movie chastise her for it? I wish I liked the movie more, but I didn’t. Milioti tries very hard – sometimes too hard – to be charming and adorable, and she mostly succeeds but I just couldn’t get on board, and I felt exhausted for me and her after a while.
