Do we really need the reality show ‘Fire Island’ on LOGO to exist? This show has a bunch of gay guys living the summer dream of a house by the beach in The Pines in Fire Island, one of those gay mecca places. Honestly, why shouldn’t a show like this exist? If the world has the Kardashians, why can’t the gay community have their own? I didn’t necessarily welcome this show with open arms, though in the back of my mind, I was wanting it to be some kind of guilty pleasure television show.
Two episodes in, I am a little bored by it. It seems to follow all your predictable reality show tropes, and that is my main beef with it. Although I have never summered in Fire Island, and in fact have only been there once in my life, I would think that there would be enough organic drama if you put young gay guys together in one house. Yet it seems like the conflicts here are manufactured, and I feel the hand of too many producers. Trust me, just leave these people alone, and there will be plenty of drama to be had.
Plus, I find the show joyless. Part of the fun when I watch shows like these is when the cast mingles and jells, and seeing them get along and have fun is as much fun as seeing them embroiled in conflict. I don’t see anyone here cracking up jokes, and I feel like they take this thing too seriously.
At this point, I am bored. But I am sure I will catch forthcoming episodes at some point, and doubt it will be appointment television for me.
