I saw the pilot of ‘Champions’ and it did not register at all. But I know a lot of people who love the show, and keep on recommending it to me, so I told myself, you know what? I am going to give the show a second viewing, and if it still doesn’t work for me, then I can say that I gave it more than one shot. And I am glad I did, because I have now watched the first three episodes of the show, and I can say I like it enough to keep on watching.
This is produced and written by Mindy Kaling, who I sometimes like, and sometimes don’t. You can actually sense her hand on this via its comedic tone, and in this case, I am digging her. But the most attractive part of the series for me? This features a gay teenager who is ‘transplanted’ to New York, and is accepted at the Performing Arts High School and his orientation is so matter of fact here, almost a non-issue that I never felt offended by any of the jokes around it. It helps that there’s a great cast, starting with JJ Totah, who plays Michael Patel, a gay character composite of Just Jack and Kurt from Glee. I hope the writers give the character more layers than just sass as the series matures. For now, I am satisfied, and await more.
