I am not a fan of films that stress me, that make me scared, or anxious – do you ever see me watch horror – so I wasn’t really sure if I wanted to see ‘Hotel Mumbai.’ (I have yet to see a movie about 9/11 – I was there and surely do not want to relive it) But there is Dev Patel and Armie Hammer luring me into this film, and I couldn’t resist.
Anthony Maras’ film is one of the toughest watches I have seen in a while – my anxiety started from the beginning of the film, and never let up. Mindless and senseless killings abound, and it never not shocked me. I felt like covering my eyes (I did) through 80 percent of the film. Is it good film making? Yes. Maras is relentless with the action and the heart pounding never ceases. An emotionally, you cannot help but be in there. But as an experience, it really isn’t for me. This is akin to seeing a horrific horror film, and I don’t think I would ever want to experience this again.
