High Holidays (Music Thoughts: Christmas Changes Everything, Matt Bloyd)

Matt Bloyd is a Los Angeles based singer, but I think he is Broadway adjacent – I first knew of him from his duet with Shoshana Bean singing ‘Who Would Imagine A King,’ and I loved that track. In his new Christmas album, ‘Christmas Changes Everything,’ he does a duet with another Broadway guy, Jeremy Jordan, singing ‘Hallelujah,’ and that’s a stellar track as well.

I like diva singing, and the only way I know how to describe Bloyd is that he does divo singing – extended high notes, riffs galore, vocal calisthenics. It definitely catches your attention, and he does well with most of the standard Christmas songs here ‘ Silent Night,’ and ‘Do You Hear What I Hear.’

To be honest, the loudness can be a bit tiring at times, but taken in smaller does can do the trick here.
