I’ve been waiting to sniff ‘Une Amourette’ for the longest time since I read about it last year. It’s a collaboration between fashion designer Roland Mouret and Eta Libre d’Orange. I love the exclusivities of collaborations, and I know that if there’s one house where you can be creative and out-there, it would be Eld’O.
It’s my new favorite perfume of the new year, and I know January has barely started but this one would be pretty hard to beat. Apparently Mouret has described this scent as ‘the smell of skin after sex,’ and really, if this was the case, I would have more sex because the perfume just smells so divine.
It starts with a big patchouli note, but it’s a gauzy patchouli. That is not a surprise, since the perfume is signed by Daniela Anders, who does all the gauzy Prada perfume. there’s the freshness of neroli in the opening, and it is not your usual juicy kind – this one is tempered and transparent. There’s something spicy there (black pepper, amber) but again the effect is kind of a silhouette – it’s delicate but not too flighty. If this scent was a color, I would describe it as gold – not the flashy kind but a nice understated one. Mouret has also said that there is an animalistic quality to the perfume, and I don’t quite get it, and that’s fine, because on my skin, the richness and opulence takes center stage. On his Spring 2018 show, he sprayed these in between the thighs of his models, because he wants this to be worn that way. No complaints here.
My perfumes are in storage right now because of my big move (I am living off my samples, believe it or not) but if I had the luxury of space, i would get a bottle right now. At some point, I know I have to have this, it’s going to be just a matter of when \.
Los Angeles has been kind of a second home to me of late. A lot of my close friends live there, and since it’s quite near to me, I find myself visiting often. Earlier this year, when Etat Libre d’Orange’s ‘You Or Someone Like You’ came out, I thought it would be very poetic to sniff it at Scent Bar, and I loved it. Unfortunately, they were sold out of it then, so I couldn’t get it. They gave me tons of samples of it, and I just found them today so I wore it. And I am still in love with it.
This is a creation by Chandler Burr, and based on his book of the same name. I remember reading the book when it first came out, and I wish I still had a copy of it – it would add a lot of texture to the perfume. Burr didn’t publish the notes of the perfume – he says that if you have to know the notes, then the perfume is not for you. I respect his stance, because a lot of times I like the perfume because I do, not necessarily because I like the notes that compose the scent. But ‘You Or Someone Like You’ is a green minty rose, with very big emphasis on the mint. There are other herbs with the mint, and the result is a slightly floral, even more slightly citrus minty herbaceous perfume. It’s unique, it’s very bright, it’s very ‘lit,’ and yes, it is very Los Angeles. It’s a sunny perfume, and it’s brightness is quite off-beat, and it’s very modern, which, really, is just like Los Angeles.
I still want it, and since Burr is an acquaintance (and a Facebook friend) I feel I really should own it, and when I get to LA next time, I think I should make steps to include it in my wardrobe.
I remember Henri Bendel on Fifth Avenue fondly – if only for their old perfume department. I remember when I worked not too far from it, I would walk the eight blocks and two avenues just to check out new releases from L’Artisan, or Lubin, or Etat Libre d’Orange. It had a good relationship with Eld’o that the house created a perfume in conjunction with it – called Bendelirious (I mistyped Bendelirious as Bendilicious on Google, and I got hits on the DKNY fragrance) Of course, like all things great, the perfume department at Bendel’s is a ghost of its former self – I actually was contacted by my favorite sales associate there when they were getting rid of their niche brands, and got bottles as much as 75% off.
I don’t know what possessed me to wear this scent today, and I don’t knowo why, but I remember not loving this – in my mind I remember this as a generic fruity floral – probably because it was launched in 2008?
I am suddenly utterly in love with this scent – it’s a fruity oriental. Well, the two notes that stand out to me are cherry and iris, so I guess it is technically a fruity floral, but there is one note here that shows up after the initial burst, and that is suede. The leather not, combined with the cherry makes the perfume fun and flirty. The weather has started to warm up, and it’s a sudden burst of spring for me. It’s fresh, and has promises of fun sunny days. The suede note adds an air of sophistication. It makes me feel like taking out a new Bottega Veneta bag (if I had a new one, or any)
