Overnight, Joes? (Movie Thoughts, The Overnight)

84c2beb680d60f0746db2cbbc538edc2What’s the opposite of a “feel good” movie? Is it the “feel icky” kind? Well, if that is the case, then Patrick Brice’s “The Overnight” would fit in that category, because the film would make you squirm.  This is one of those films you feel you want to unsee, and you ask yourself, “Did I just see that?”  What makes for uncomfortable viewing also makes for an interesting one, in my opinion. Because I bet you sit up through most of the film, and you kind of want to pay attention. Adam Scott and Taylor Schilling play a young married couple who just moves to Los Angeles from the Northwest. While at the park, they meet Kurt, played by Jason Schwartzman (in his best role yet) and they get invited to a dinner at the latter’s house. Early on, Emily (Schilling) suspects that something is off (By the way, Schilling plays almost the same character she plays in ‘Orange Is The New Black’ which makes me pause and think – is she a note note actress?)  and yes, something does seem weird, and without spoiling anything, “something weird” seems a little too take for what happens next. Do I think this is a movie worth seeing? Yes, but only with an open mind. It definitely has funny moments, but it also kind challenges what you believe, and how you see life. I bet that’s a better experience than your run-of-the-mill summer blockbuster.
